Time to look forward to the Giants.
There is still the matter of cutting the roster down to 53 players, but the 49ers roster is set for the most part and it is now time to look forward to the season opener against the Giants.
Each week I will preview how the 49ers matchup against each of their opponents in three places, 49ers offense vs. opponents defense, 49ers defense vs. opponents offense, and 49ers special teams vs. opponents special teams. So lets get started.
49ers offense vs. Giants defense
The 49ers will have a good challenge against the Giants defense, but they should be able to take advantage of some weaknesses the Giants have. Terrell Owens should be able to have a field day against CB's Will Allen and William Peterson. The running game will be successful if the offensive line can push DT's Keith Hamilton and Cornelius Griffin off the line. The offensive line will also have to be wary of Michael Strahan, who is coming off a record setting season and an offseason where alot of people took shots at him. Also look for Eric Johnson to have a big game
Advantage: 49ers
49ers defense vs. Giants offense
The 49ers defense should dominate a Giants offense that had a terrible preseason. Kerry Collins still has problems with committing turnovers and that is something that Ahmed Plummer and Jason Webster can take advantage. The 49ers should also be able to get able to get a good pass rush going against an offensive line that has not played well in a while. The Giants will also have trouble getting their running game going against the speed of the 49ers LB's and the power of Bryant Young and Dana Stubblefield. The only problems the 49ers may have is with rookie TE Jeremy Shockey, who has been very impressive so far, but I think the 49ers can keep him from making too many big plays.
Advantage: 49ers
49ers special teams vs. Giants special teams
I would have give the Giants the advantage in the special teams, but I now hav e my doubts after they released punter Rodney Williams. The 49ers have not been all that stable in the kicking game, but it looks like Jose Cortez will keep his job. The Giants do have the advantage in the return game with Ron Dixon who has the ability to break one at anytime, while the 49ers will have players who are unproven.
I would say the special teams units are even.
Overall I think the 49ers should be able to get a pretty convincing win over the Giants.
